The US Navy has received its USS Providence (SSN 719) Los Angeles-class submarine from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, following the completion of a major maintenance availability program.

USS Providence previously arrived at the navy’s Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for pre-inactivation restricted availability (PIRA) on 4 December 2015.

The shipyard has successfully completed the PIRA more than three weeks ahead of schedule and on budget, thereby adhering to the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) mission priority of on-time delivery of vessels and submarines.

Project superintendent Mark Ayotte said: “As a team, the shipyard with the captain and crew of Providence, focused on the positive plan forward.

“Together we reached our goal of getting the war-fighter underway to do what they do best for the navy and our country.”

The PIRA conducted on USS Providence involved approximately 200,000 man-days of work, which was originally scheduled for a time frame of 15.7 months.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard commander captain Dave Hunt said: “Portsmouth is committed to safely delivering first-time quality work, on time and on budget.

“It is our commitment to safety and quality that enables us to deliver these submarines on or ahead of schedule and provide the combatant commanders Los Angeles-class with the assets they need, when they are needed.”

The 360ft-long nuclear-powered fast attack Los Angeles-class submarines feature a displacement of approximately 6,900t submerged, and are fitted with one nuclear reactor and a shaft and can cruise at speeds in excess of 25kn.

The submarines are also equipped with 12 Vertical Launch System tubes for firing Tomahawk cruise missiles.
